Housing access and affordability
In the 2026 Oklahoma governor’s debate, candidates described a statewide housing crisis and affordability squeeze in which families struggle to stretch dollars to month’s end. Proposed approaches include working with tribes and local leaders on better housing options, alongside broader investments in child care and health care, framing housing access as a core pocketbook issue for the governor’s race and state policy.

We also have to work to make sure that we have better housing options across the state of Oklahoma. And as governor, I will do that by working with our tribes, by working with local leaders who are already on the ground all across the state of Oklahoma, addressing our housing crisis. ... that’s the real issue that we’re facing with our affordability crisis and especially housing access.
Positions on this issue · liberal → conservative
- Major state spending and mandates to expand affordable housing with tribal and local partners
- State grants and coordination to increase housing supply while protecting vulnerable renters
- Limited state partnership with localities and tribes without large new housing bureaucracies
- Reduce regulation and let market homebuilding address supply with minimal state programs
- State government should largely stay out of housing; cut taxes so families can afford market rates
