NJ Transit operating support and fares

The FY2027 budget increases state operating support for NJ Transit by hundreds of millions (including Corporate Transit Fee revenue), alongside major capital funding for highways, bridges, and transit. Even with the increase, coverage is described as insufficient to avoid a pending fare increase, keeping affordability and service quality in focus for commuters.

The FY 2027 budget includes more than $1 billion in State operating support for NJ TRANSIT, an increase of $215 million or 26 percent from support provided by the State in FY 2026. This includes NJ Transit’s General Fund subsidy of $282.2 million and $765.6 million in dedicated revenue from the Corporate Transit Fee. The budget also includes approximately $2.1 billion for the State Transportation Capital Program.

Overall state funding for New Jersey Transit was also set to increase, though not by enough to avoid a pending fare increase.
Positions on this issue  Β·  liberal → conservative
  1. Heavily increase public subsidies so fares can be frozen or cut and service expanded
  2. Raise state support enough to minimize fare hikes while investing in reliability and frequency
  3. Maintain current subsidy growth and accept modest fare increases as needed
  4. Limit subsidy growth and rely more on fares and efficiencies to cover operating costs
  5. Reduce operating subsidies and push transit toward greater farebox and private funding
