Data center development moratorium

The Charlotte City Council unanimously voted to impose a 150-day moratorium on new data center development in the city. Councilmembers cited concerns about environmental impacts, effects on nearby communities, and the proximity of data centers to K-12 schools. Projects already underway are not affected by the moratorium, as halting them could expose the city to legal liability.

Should Charlotte pause new data center development while studying its community and environmental impacts?

We have to understand what the impacts are to communities, we have to understand what the impacts are to the environment, the impacts to small children, and having these facilities close, or approximate to K-12 schools.
Positions on this issue  ยท  liberal → conservative
  1. Ban new data centers permanently near residential areas and schools, regardless of economic benefit.
  2. Support the 150-day moratorium and use the pause to craft strict zoning and environmental rules.
  3. Allow the moratorium to proceed but ensure the study also weighs jobs and economic development.
  4. Shorten the moratorium and fast-track new data centers that meet basic environmental standards.
  5. Lift the moratorium immediately; data centers bring jobs and should not face extra regulatory barriers.
